What actually changed in PoE2 patch 0.5.1?
Patch 0.5.1 is less about flashy new toys and more about fixing the rough edges players hit after Return of the Ancients went live. If you've been mapping, trading, or trying to make sense of league progression, you'll notice the difference pretty fast. The Atlas gets 24 new passive skills at the top, mostly tied to biomes, while several endgame areas now grant more Atlas Passive Skill Points. Anyone who cleared those places before the patch should get the missing points after logging in. Did Abyss farming get nerfed too hard?
Yeah, Abyss took a real hit. Elite Abyss monsters now deal less damage, have less life, and give reduced loot and experience. Shepherd of the Pit's Lightning Tendrils are much weaker now, and Harano, the Meat Carver lost damage and life, with his Slam also toned down. Some players are calling it a ladder-pull moment, and honestly, it's easy to see why. If your plan was to settle into Abyss as your main league farm, you'll probably want to test the returns again instead of trusting week-one numbers.
Are the new passive and gem changes worth building around?
The new elemental passives are probably the most interesting long-term part of the patch. There are 40 new Elemental Passive Skills near Jewel Sockets, especially around the Sorceress, Witch, and Druid areas, so spell and elemental setups get more room to breathe. Elemental Infusion nodes also got small but useful buffs. The bigger build shake-up comes from support gems losing old restrictions. Cold Attunement, Fire Attunement, Lightning Attunement, Icebite, and Innervate are no longer attack-only, which opens up cleaner scaling for spell builds. Second Wind now working with totems and clones is also a quiet but important fix. Hollow Form Martial Artist and Spell Totem Oracle players may not rebuild overnight, but they've got more options now.
What fixes should endgame players care about first?
A lot of the important fixes are boring on paper but great in practice. Invalid Atlas Maps should be less of a problem. Burning Monolith progression no longer breaks if Doryani dialogue was skipped. Party members can now open Map portals in their own Hideout even when they're not the leader. Call of the Shadows Fragment and Origin Fragments were added to the Currency Exchange, which helps players access pinnacle fights without weird trade workarounds. Delirium Fog also received several fixes, including issues with invalid maps and fog spread. It's the kind of patch where you don't always clap when reading the notes, but you're glad it exists once you're playing.
What should returning players do after logging in?
Check your Atlas points first, then look at your farming plan. If you were leaning on Abyss, run a few maps and judge the rewards yourself. Don't assume old loot clips still apply. If you play Runes of Aldur, Farrow now gives better rune guidance, Remnant crafting has fewer blockers, and Tidal Rune waves no longer shove you around. Build players should also revisit support gems, especially if they use clones, totems, or elemental conversion. Trade feels a bit better on controller too, with pseudo stat sorting and a direct market button.
